“From Grand Challenges to Lighthouse initiatives” EERA JP Wind & SETWind webinar on May 5 & 6

The Wind scientific community is again called upon to express its opinion, this time about the scientific challenges to be addressed in the lighthouse initiatives. This happens in the 2 days webinar organized by EERA JP Wind & SETWind on May 5th & 6th, 2021.

The term “lighthouse initiative” refers to a visionary, science-driven large-scale initiative with significant budget (tens of millions of Euros) and duration (5 years or more) that will address grand scientific and technical challenges that are crucial for the further advancement of offshore wind energy, providing new knowledge and basis for innovation.

The lighthouse initiatives address two areas:

  • Floating offshore wind technology to make floating offshore wind cost competitive.
  • Integration of large-scale offshore wind energy to enable the future reliable operation and zero emission of the power system.

The workshop aims to discuss and define the list of grand challenges to be addresses in the lighthouse initiatives. This process had already started in 2020 with the thematic series of workshops organized by EERA JP Wind & SETWind, that brought to publication of the EERA JP Wind R&I Strategy.

The workshop is structured in 5 session, presenting the 3 main challenges individuated for the discussion:

Wednesday 5th May

9:00-10:00 > Introduction to lighthouse initiatives, aim and goal – Peter Eecen

10:00-12:00 > Improved understanding of atmospheric and wind power plant flow physics – Jake Badger

13:00-15:00 > The interaction between aerodynamics, structural dynamics and hydrodynamics of enlarged floating wind turbines – Peter Eecen

Thursday 6th May

09:00-11:00 > Systems science for integration of wind power plants – Nikos Cutululis

11.00 -12.00 > Summary, call to action, and way to proceed – Peter Eecen

A list of topics will be proposed for each grand challenge with the idea to discuss it and integrate it with the contributions from the wind scientific community. The workshop will be online but thanks to digital tools will be possible to brainstorm on white boards. It will be also asked to participants to express their opinion to rank the topics, to prioritize and distribute over the lighthouse initiatives the priorities defined for floating wind technologies and integration of large-scale offshore wind energy.

Here the full programme.

The outcomes of the workshop will be preparatory material for updating the EERA JP Wind R&I Strategy. They will be also included in the deliverables of SETWind, the European project finance by H2020.
